Industries such as health care, education and government, where many women were employed, did not feel the pinch of recession as much.
‘Women could ride out the recession with less job losses,’ she said.
But now that the women”s labor market is more diverse, as the economy goes, so goes the fortunes of women.
That makes the job center”s re-opening timely.
‘This move came at a very good time,’ volunteer Denise Norman said. ‘The organization is seeing an influx of clients.’
Women at Work witnessed a 50 percent jump in job seekers this summer, compared to the same period last year, McCarthy said. In June, the center saw 636 clients come through its doors compared with a typical month of about 500, McCarthy said.
Many have simply lost their jobs in an economy sagging from the weight of an ever-tightening credit market and the collapse of the housing market.more
